Hong Kong – Benvenuto to the 6th edition of Cine Italiano! – Cinema Italian Style in Hong Kong! Produced by Istituto Luce Cinecittà and the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture and Heritage – Film Department in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong and the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong, the festival will run from 20 to 24 September 2017 at The Grand Cinema. Hong Kong film lovers will be able to enjoy an impressive showcase of award-winning Italian films and restored classics, as well as meet the talented directors Fabio GRASSADONIA and Antonio PIAZZA of Sicilian Ghost Story.
Sicilian Ghost Story, which opened the 2017 Cannes Critics’ Week, serves as this year’s Opening Film. A beautiful mix of mythological tropes and harsh reality, the film’s visionary direction gives a nod to Tim Burton and David Lynch. One of Italy’s greatest comedians, Roberto Benigni plays in his all-time classic Life is Beautiful, the multi-award-winning tragicomedy which has been restored to its full glory to capture the hearts of a new generation of film lovers. Captivating performances are best seen in Tenderness and Fortunata, whose actor and actress won the Best Actor of Italian Golden Globes and Best Actress awards of Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival respectively. The directors of Children of the Night and Pure Hearts give fresh voices to the Italian cinema; both movies are fascinating dramas about the beauty and turmoil of untamed youth. Come and explore the perilous adventure of a man in Ears, and of two gangs in The War of the Yokels, where you will experience the world’s absurdity.
“We are honoured to once again work with Istituto Luce Cinecittà and the Italian Cultural Institute for the Cine Italiano! programme and continue the HKIFFS’ tradition of introducing local audiences to a very strong and diverse selection that truly highlights contemporary and classic Italian cinema,” said Roger GARCIA, Executive Director of the HKIFFS.
“We have begun this challenge since 2012, trusting the experience of the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and enjoying the enthusiastic support of the Italian Consulate General and Cultural Institute. I am thrilled to bring some of the best Italian films, both classic and contemporary ones to Hong Kong again,” said Mr. Roberto CICUTTO, president and CEO of Istituto Luce Cinecittà.
“The success of Cine Italiano! for the past five years has been a great encouragement. Entering the 6th edition, we look forward to showcasing our great cinema culture in Hong Kong!” said Hon. Antonello DE RIU, Consul General of Italy in Hong Kong.
