BIC, Sakhir ? Ali Baslar made a winning start to the national karting season last week, following a resounding victory in round one of the 2016/2017 Bahrain SWS Sprint Championship (SWS).
Bahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC) in Sakhir welcomed a massive grid of 23 competitors for what was the first of eight rounds in the new SWS campaign.
Baslar took home the honours after winning the event?s Final race, held over a total of 15 laps around BIKC?s 1.414-kilometre Commission Internationale de Karting (CIK) Track. He completed the sprint in 18 minutes 27.615 seconds, narrowly defeating runner-up Rashid Almuammari by just 0.210 seconds.
Mohammed Mattar came in third place while Abdulla Buhindi was fourth. Mattar was classified 6.084 seconds behind the winner and Buhindi finished 6.305s adrift. Rounding out the top eight were Khalied Alsaie, Hussain Hasan, Ahmed Ebrahim and Bader Mubarak. Alsaie completed the race distance 8.054s from first place, Hasan was 8.482s back, Ebrahim finished 9.718s behind and Mubarak was 11.499s adrift.
Earlier in the day, Mattar won the Pre-Final race, held over a total of 11 laps. He finished the event in 13:35.519. Alsaie followed in second place while Buhindi was third.
The result of the Pre-Final determined the start grid for the Final, with the leading eight in reverse order.
Qualifying was led by a battling Alsaie, who clocked a fastest lap of 1:12.810. Baslar was second just 0.037s off the pace, while Mattar was third with a best lap 0.197s slower.
All drivers were competing in Sodi RT8 390cc karts which were provided by BIKC.
Following the season-opener, round two will be taking place June 23.
BIKC is offering a special deal for all drivers who are registered for the round. To help them prepare for the upcoming action, competitors will be able to buy one arrive-and-drive session and get another for free. This allows the drivers a chance to maximise their time out on the track as they gear up for another meeting of high-octane racing. The offer is valid all through the holy month of Ramadan.
The Bahrain SWS Sprint Championship is an arrive-and-drive series, making it widely popular amongst Bahrain?s motor racing enthusiasts. It is open to karters of all skill levels and experience, as they are provided a chance to compete in a fun yet professionally run event.
All interested participants aged 16 years old and above, both men and women of any nationality, are welcome to take part.
Following the season?s first two rounds this Ramadan, round three will take place on?October 7?and round four on?November 25, marking the final event of the calendar year. The championship moves on to 2017 with round five on?January 6, round six on?February 17, round seven on?March 24?and then finally concludes with round eight on?April 7.
SWS rounds three through eight will be held under the umbrella of the Bahrain?Karting?Sprint Championship, which also features the Bahrain Rotax Mojo Max Championship.
